How does Colgate Total® work to prevent gingivitis (bleeding gums)?

Gingivitis (bleeding gums) occurs in the presence of plaque. Plaque consists mainly of bacteria. Since Colgate Total® has a highly effective antibacterial agent, it prevents plaque building up, and therefore prevents the cause of bleeding gums. Colgate does, however, strongly emphasise that this is not a replacement for regular professional dental care.
